Looking at my local fedimeteo post for today, I was rather taken aback by a *’warning’* that it was forecast to be -5 Celsius!

        Like this 🥶!

Love the fedimeteo service generally but warnings like this make me feel it’s necessary to double check other resources.

I’m not sure where the meteorological standard comes from but -5 Celsius and sunny is a beautiful and pleasant winter day here — a perfect day for skating outdoors on natural ice or taking a stroll. ⛸️

Ontario provincial regulations require children in daycare and elementary schools to be outside for at least two recreational breaks a day in this weather.

Many of us are out in a light winter jacket or even a heavy sweater, good boots, gloves and perhaps a hat or earband — it’s not unexpected to see a few people out in shorts in such weather.

Cold warnings only start when the windchill adjusted temperature forecast is for below -20 Celsius.

Is there by chance any way for the forecasts to import the official Weather Canada warnings rather than ones based on climates unlike our own?

Thank you for your feedback! You're right, it doesn't make sense: what I consider cold here couldn't be cold there. And this could be the same for other warnings (like heat waves, flooding, etc).
          I've removed the Warnings.

Unfortunately, I can't consider any single situation (at the moment), so implementing it would be hard. For now, I've just removed those warnings and will try to reason a little more on if/how to re-implement them.

I've reorganised the forecasts' output and now it should be easier to understand, with the most important data first. As many instances and clients will add a "Read more" button after a specific amount of text, I tried to concentrate the most important information (and the "alerts") in the first part of the posts.

FediMeteo got a solid upgrade today 🌤️

From now on, forecasts are richer, clearer, and a bit smarter, without losing the familiar, readable style.

You will now see more complete current conditions at a glance: feels-like temperature, humidity, pressure, visibility, UV index, and wind gusts, all grouped in a dedicated Details section. Sunrise and sunset times for the current day are also included.

The wind line is back in focus, clearly highlighted for current conditions, and gusts are shown separately using 💨 emoji so they are easy to spot and not confused with average wind.

Pressure is no longer just a number: FediMeteo now shows a real pressure trend over the last few hours, telling you if it is rising, falling, or staying stable.

A new Warnings section has been added. When relevant, the bot will automatically flag things like:

                    • extreme feels-like temperatures, hot or cold
                    • high UV levels
                    • poor air quality
                    • thunderstorms
                    • heavy rain likely
                    • strong winds or gusts
Hourly forecasts remain at 12 hours, but now include pressure too, which makes short-term weather changes easier to read and anticipate.

Everything is fully localised. Labels like “feels like”, section titles, and weather descriptions are consistent across languages, and all weather conditions are now covered everywhere.

In short: same FediMeteo you are used to, but with more context, clearer signals, and fewer surprises.

These changes will start appearing with the next forecast update.

Bug Fix: Wind Direction Arrows Now Correct!

Thanks to user feedback, I've fixed a bug where wind arrows were pointing in the wrong direction.

Previously, a 160° wind (from the south) showed an arrow pointing south ↓. Now it correctly shows ↑, pointing north where the wind is blowing to.

Wind arrows now follow the intuitive convention: they point in the direction the wind is moving, not where it's coming from.

Thanks to our community for catching this!

                                              Happy New Year, friends!

New year, new features! Let’s go step by step:

                                              • Some results for city coordinates were not fully accurate, and forecasts were referring to the center of the administrative area rather than the actual city center. This also affected my own city, with a shift of about 30 km. I have revised the coordinate calculation process and, starting from the next update, the reference point will be the center of the target city. I actually discovered this while implementing the last item on this list...
                                              • In addition to wind speed, FediMeteo will now include an arrow showing wind direction. The direction will also be reported as a value in degrees. This feature has been requested several times in the past, and I think the time has come to introduce it.
                                              • New data added: AQI, the Air Quality Index. Using different indices for each local context would have been complicated, and reporting them all would have made the output unnecessarily complex. For this reason, I chose to use the American AQI for all cities, with a visual indicator to quickly understand the situation at a glance. This is consistent with major weather apps and allows for proper comparisons between different cities. PM2.5 and PM10 values are also included.
I hope these new features will be useful and… let’s keep moving forward!

Here is the CPU usage graph for the last 24 hours of the FediMeteo VM. A full 24 hours, during which a huge number of people are connecting, helped by the traction gained from being among the top stories on Hacker News and Lobsters, as well as the many shares across the Fediverse.

RAM usage? Active, around 450 MB. Then there is cache, ARC, and so on. But in practice, zero swap in use after days of uptime.

39 jails running, 39 snac instances, nginx serving the homepage, and HAProxy. HAProxy caching enabled. ZFS snapshots every 15 minutes, backups via zfs send and receive every hour. The same hourly schedule applies to the recalculation of cities, countries, and followers for the homepage.

All of this on a 4 euro per month FreeBSD VM.

If anyone has doubts about the quality and efficiency of FreeBSD, this is the data to show.

Time series graph showing CPU usage percentage over roughly 24 hours. The x axis represents time from about 13:00 to 12:00 the next day, and the y axis shows CPU usage from 0 to 100 percent. CPU usage fluctuates mostly between 15 and 35 percent, with periodic rises during daytime and early morning hours. Several short spikes reach around 45 to 55 percent, and one brief peak climbs to about 60 percent. Usage drops to lower levels, around 10 to 20 percent, during late evening and early morning periods. Overall, the graph shows moderate, variable CPU load with occasional sharp peaks.

                                                        Thanks for the suggestion!
In FediMeteo we rely on the location identifiers provided by the Open-Meteo API.
For this specific location, the API uses "Londonderry" as the canonical name, and we currently follow that identifier to avoid ambiguity and mismatches in the data.
For this reason, the username cannot be changed, as it is tied to the Open-Meteo API identifier.
I have updated the display name and description to reflect both names. Due to caching, the previous setup may still be visible, but the updated description should appear within a few hours.
This is a technical choice rather than an editorial one.

In the past few days FediMeteo seemed to be having some performance trouble. I dug into it and only found minor issues, until I realised the VM itself had fallen off a cliff. After several reboots it became clear that both bandwidth and I/O latency had dropped to absurd levels. I suspect the provider slapped a cap on it.

So I took the chance to move everything to another VM and provider, still at 4 euro per month. And starting today, forecasts will be delivered straight from Italy. The performance jump feels like going from a storm to clear skies.

FediMeteo’s mission goes on. More countries are coming (stay tuned!) and we will keep aiming to serve everything from a 4 euro VM. I do have powerful hardware available, but proving that the project can run on tiny resources is still part of the mission.

It served us well, but it had a major flaw: if I rebooted the server while it was posting, the job just died halfway. If the server was down during a scheduled slot, the forecast was lost forever.

So, I wrote a custom Python daemon to run inside the FreeBSD Jails.
