A significant spike occurs in the early afternoon, where the activity level reaches nearly 100, marking a sharp increase in activity. This spike coincides with the announcement by @FediFollows of new cities. Throughout most of the day, activity levels fluctuate between 10 and 40, with some peaks reaching up to 50 at different times. Notably, some of these levels coincide with backup operations. Early morning and late evening hours show lower activity levels, generally ranging between 10 and 20. Some technical details for those interested:
The entire FediMeteo setup runs on a FreeBSD VM costing around 4 euros per month. It supports almost all major EU countries (plus the UK), with just a few left to complete. Currently, there are 25 separate jails, each running its own instance of snac, totaling 25 instances. The VM load typically stays around 10%, which increases to 30% when updates are published for countries with larger numbers of cities (currently Germany and Italy). The only time the load spikes is when new countries are announced; during that time, all remote instances connect to all cities to download their details.
As for RAM usage, excluding the ZFS cache, it's currently a total of 213 MB. Yes, MB.

@admin how is precipitation data calculated? It seems like it does some calculation based on top of Open-Meteo and (sums?) it up or something. Because for example @vilnius shows crazy amounts (5-25mm) which would be catastrophic 🙂 But if you look at raw data, it's normal 0.01 mm per hour and similar.

Asking the raw data, here's what Open-Meteo is providing me:
"precipitation_sum":[5.80,1.20,0.90,1.20,3.30,0.00,6.00]

This means: 5.80 mm total rain for today - from 00:00 to 23:59. I don't know if it's correct or not, but it's what Open-Meteo is reporting. According to Open-Meteo, most of today's rain has already fallen.

I've just updated all the bots. Main changes:

- At night, the sun emoji will no longer appear, but the moon emoji will. Seeing 'Sunny' during nighttime was weird.
- Added precipitation probabilities, in percentage. Sometimes this parameter is more important than the quantity.
- Other code fixes.

In the coming days, I will completely reorganize the code since, as of now, it is not very adaptable across different languages (one program per language). The goal is to have a single program that can post in multiple languages, localized

Weather has always influenced our lives: from agriculture to outdoor activities, to extreme events that, thanks to modern technology, can now be predicted with greater reliability. Personally, weather plays a significant role in my daily decisions, which is why I decided to create a service tailored for the Fediverse.

FediMeteo uses Open-Meteo data to publish updates every 6 hours, including current weather conditions, forecasts for the next 12 hours, and predictions for the upcoming days. Each country is served by its own dedicated instance (e.g., it.fedimeteo.com for Italy), managed through snac to ensure simplicity and efficiency in publishing.

You can follow FediMeteo directly in the Fediverse (on Mastodon and compatible platforms), via RSS, or by visiting the dedicated page for your city (e.g., fr.fedimeteo.com/paris).

@stefano @admin Nice initiative! Do you think it would be possible to implement probabilistic forecasts in the future? We've known for decades that a deterministic five-day forecast up to one or two decimals is simply not realistic. Ensemble forecasts have been around for 30 years or so.

@RutgerDankers @admin I'm using Open-Meteo and all the results come from there. I haven't checked the kind of forecasts they're providing, but I found they're quite reliable, at least for the places I'm living/going to

@stefano @admin Dedication for grandpa means a lot. I guess many, many of us have anecdotes about relationships with grandparents. They play a key role in constructing ourselves. Different from parents, but often a key role. I had a special relationship with one of my grandmas. She made me feel like I was special and important too, and would take me with her during her (short) 1day bus journeys in the country with her aged friends. She was important. Will not forget her and what she meant to express about me.

@EnigmaRotor @admin Thank you for sharing your story. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a kid/teenager. Then, I grew up and moved away. In their later years, I didn't call them often. It was some sort of self-protection, as I had assumed they could live forever. Now, I blame myself for that one call I could have made - but didn’t.

@stefano @admin I’ll tell you something : we all surely have done the same, putting our interests in our own life which is to be constructed, putting focus on studies, work, loved ones, and then realizing we should have had much more time with them when then were with us.

This is common, yet it’s a hard feeling. They also may have done the same during their own youth.

@thinkberg@tetrax.de the amount of displayed data has been selected studying what people usually need:
- short term (12 hours) forecasts will help commuters
- long term forecasts will help people that have to plan outdoor activities

The emojis will help people unable to understand the local language, the text is more precise and will also increase accessibility.

That said, maybe a "more compact" version could come in the future. I'll keep this in mind and thank you for suggesting it!

@admin I am feeding it into my "News" feed, and it is about 2-3 times longer than a usual news post ( @tagesschau), I think a compact alternative may be useful for some people.

While I like emojis, keep in mind that they might not be barrier free.
